Our fundamental beliefs

What We Believe

Our faith is based exclusively and entirely on the HOLY BIBLE, which we believe is God's inspired Word and the foundation for understanding who He is, the saving work of Jesus Christ, and God's will for our lives.

The Holy Bible

We believe that the Holy Bible is the God-breathed and infallible Word of God. The Old and New Testaments constitute the sole and absolute rule of faith for our lives. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, continual study, and prayer, we come to know God, learn about the saving work of His Son, Jesus Christ, through His sacrifice on the cross, and receive guidance to continually follow His will in our lives.

The Triune God

We believe in God the Father, God the Son Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit, with all their attributes as revealed in the Holy Bible.

Jesus Christ and His Work

We believe in the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who miraculously became man through His birth from the Virgin Mary, lived a sinless life, and, taking our place on the cross and bearing the sins of the whole world, died so that justice might be satisfied. He rose bodily on the third day, ascended into heaven, and is the only mediator between God and humanity. His work is complete and finished. Whoever repents and accepts the work of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is saved. We look forward to the return of Jesus Christ in glory.

Salvation – A Gift of God’s Grace

We believe that a person cannot be saved by good works, religious ceremonies, or simply by living a moral life. Salvation is a gift from God, offered through His love and grace. A person receives this gift through personal repentance and faith in Jesus Christ and in the work of His sacrifice on the cross.

Spiritual Rebirth

We believe that the Christian life begins with spiritual rebirth, an inner change brought about by the Holy Spirit in a person’s heart when that person repents, believes in the work of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, and receives Him as Savior. The Holy Spirit dwells in the believer, comforts and guides the believer, and enables the believer to live a life of holiness, love, and service. If the believer remains faithful to the end, then the believer will forever be a co-heir with Jesus Christ in Heaven.

WE HAVE NO CONNECTION WHATSOEVER WITH JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES OR THEIR AFFILIATED GROUPS

Our Church

Our church belongs to the family of Free Evangelical Churches of Greece. At the center of our faith, life, worship, and ministry is the person of Jesus Christ, as He is presented in the Word of God, the Holy Bible.

Our desire is for our church to be a spiritual home, open to every person who is seeking truth, hope, and genuine fellowship with God. Through the study of the Holy Bible, prayer, fellowship with one another, and the Lord’s Supper, we seek to know God and to live each day according to His Word.

1939 — Today

Our History

The presence of the Free Evangelical Church in Heraklion is a journey of spiritual searching, faith, devotion, and trust in God that began in 1939 and continues to this day. This work was built through the desire of people in our city to know God and to live with the Word of God as their guide.

1939

The Beginning

The clock of time takes us back to the first decades of the 20th century, specifically to 1939. A small group, with a deep love for the Word of God, took the first steps toward establishing an evangelical community in Heraklion.

Within the social conditions of that time, which were not always favorable to such an effort, the group began meeting with a shared desire to study the Word of God, pray, and share in the fellowship of faith. Among the pioneers of this first group were Michael Makrogamvrakis and Dimitrios Semertzakis. Dimitrios Semertzakis made a room available in a property he owned behind the Heraklion Archaeological Museum so that the group could hold its gatherings there.

Sapoutie

The Official Beginning on Sapoutie Street

The first official gathering of our church took place in a space on Sapoutie Street. In this place, the first hymns were sung and the first sermons were preached, laying the foundations for the organized presence of the Free Evangelical Church in Heraklion.

Ikarou

The Years on Ikarou Street

As time passed, as the Lord added new people to the church and its spiritual needs grew, the community needed a new, more comfortable space for worship.

The church first moved to and operated for quite some time on Kantanoleontos Street and then moved to Ikarou Street, where it continued its journey under the spiritual care and guidance of Michael Makrogamvrakis. These years were decisive in shaping the life and identity of the church. It became a spiritual beacon in Heraklion, a refuge where many people found encouragement and were built up in the faith through prayer, study of the Holy Bible, and fellowship with other believers.

Today

Today

After a long and blessed journey, the Free Evangelical Church of Heraklion acquired its own permanent home. Today we are located in our own premises at 33 Rodon Street in Heraklion, Crete.

This place is more than a building; it is our spiritual home. It is the place where we gather as a spiritual family to worship God, hear and study His Word, pray, and support one another.

Looking ahead, we continue with the same desire: to remain faithful to the Word of God, to serve Jesus Christ, and to share the message of the Gospel with the community of Heraklion.
